The Chinese government is a massive series of institutions. One of those instutions, the General Administration of Press and Publication, gives licenses to publishers and also closely monitors all publications in the People’s Republic of China. Like any government agency, there are many different offices within that administration. One of them is the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications.
Late last year, this office conducted a crackdown which resulted in closing down 60,000 websites deemed pornographic. Interestingly enough, they enlisted the help of Chinese mothers of adolescents in China’s Yunnan Province to “help monitor and find pornographic websites“.
