Harry Potter is very popular here in Korea. In 1999, Kim Eun-kyung convinced her father, Kim Jong-chul who is CEO of Moonhak Soochup, to take the money laid aside for her wedding and use that to purchase the rights to the Harry Potter stories.
Since then, Moonhak Soochup has become one of the most successful publishing companies in Korea. At first, J.K. Rowling had a very hard time finding a publisher in Britain. Bloomsbury, a small publishing house, decided to take a gamble and soon they had a hit on their hands. A good deal of Bloomsbury’s subsequent success can be attributed to the gamble they took on the Harry Potter stories. It seems that the same could be said for Moonhak Soochup. A lot of other publishers considered and rejected publishing J.K. Rowling’s stories, fearing that the stories did not have good literary value or that they wouldn’t sell in Korea.
