彭麗媛

This next year, the People’s Republic of China is to experience a transition.  President Hu Jintao’s two terms as president of the People’s Republic are soon to end.  Most likely, he will be replaced by his Vice-President, Xi Jinping (习近平).  Unusually, Vice-President Xi’s wife is more famous and better known than he is, or at least she was.

General Peng Liyuan (彭丽媛) of the People’s Liberation Army is well known throughout China and is considered one of China’s most famous folk singers.  She started out as an ordinary soldier.  However, her vocal talents soon came to the attention of her superiors and she began appearing on television.  Like the Soviet Red Army, the People’s Liberation Army includes musical ensembles and dance troupes.  She holds a master’s degree in Chinese folk music.  If all goes according to plan, she will become China’s first lady in 2012.

Here, she appears with the very famous Chinese pianist Lang Lang in a rendition of “My Motherland”.

  1. So she got her singing career from serving in the military and her husband may soon be president of China? That is definitely crazy. Good for her. 🙂

  2. She has a very nice voice. I’m glad it had subtitles. That pianist is great!

  3. On Chinese New Year’s, the People’s Liberation Army has their annual TV gala. That is where she really got to be well known. From what I’ve read of Vice-President Xi and his wife, Gen. Peng Liyuan, their first years of marriage involved long periods of separation. She was touring all over China and he was running things as the Communist Party chief in another part of China. They have a daughter who is currently studying at Harvard.
