The Crystal Cathedral, located in Garden Grove, California has long been the center of the ministry of Dr. Robert H. Schuller. Dr. Schuller, who is perhaps best known for his appearances on the Hour of Power as well as for his many books and speeches, has long carried on the “positive thinking” approach of the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.
It seems that the Crystal Cathedral and its allied ministries have gotten themselves into such a deep financial hole that no amount of possibility thinking is going to really get them out. They may well have to sell the building and much of the other real estate they own in order to stay alive. There has also been ugly infighting among various factions of the Schuller family. Additionally, the bankruptcy trustees are questioning the large salaries the entire Schuller family recieves. While the ministry did not have to reveal its financial records in the past, bankruptcy proceedings have caused them to be made public.
The Catholic Diocese of Orange has been without a cathedral for some time. Like the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Diocese of Oakland, they have been wanting to build a new cathedral. While the Los Angeles and Oakland cathedrals are now completed, the new Cathedral for Orange, still in the planning stages, would be located in Santa Ana, CA. However, the cost of a new one would be in the $100 million range. The Diocese of Orange is looking into the possibility of acquiring the Crystal Cathedral and making that their new cathedral. It would be sufficiently large for the diocese’s needs and would cost about half the projected cost of a new, large building.
While the Diocese has not made a formal offer as yet, they are interested.
