A couple of years ago, when the Great Recession was at its peak, I returned to the States to find myself in shock over the large number of vacant shopping centres in the Phoenix area. While Arizona has definitely been hit hard, Detroit perhaps has borne some of the worst of it.
The population of Detroit has dropped by some 25 percent. Abandoned buildings now are everywhere in the city. They now take up perhaps a third of the city.
The French photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have documented a great deal of this. To see some of their work, click here.
