I suppose that with Christmas upon us, it is time for a little Christmas music. A few weeks, Pope Benedict XVI created some new cardinals. Among them was Monsignor Domenico Bartolucci, a priest, choral coductor, and scholar of the Renaissance polyphony of the Roman school of the sixteenth century. Monsignor Bartolucci had been appointed choir director for life of the Sistine Choir by Pope Pius XII, though he would eventually retire from this role. He is currently 93 years of age.
Cardinal Bartolucci also composed many works for choir in addition to making many arrangements. His arrangement of Adeste Fideles is quite lovely and is sung here by the Polyphonic Choir of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, a music school operating under the auspices of the Holy See (the Vatican).
