Baby Buddha

Here’s a statue of the baby Buddha standing astride an elephant outside a Buddhist supplies shop.  On the Buddha’s birthday, devout Buddhists often pour water over a statue of the baby Buddha.  I’m not sure what the background it is.

  1. I’m not sure if it is the same rite, but there is a rite involving pouring water over a baby Buddha statue to atone for abortion and pray for the soul of the unborn child, which I have posted about before — Water Baby Offering Rites.
