Haechi at Gyeongbokgung

If you visit Korea’s old royal palaces, you often will find these creatures known as haechi or haetae.  These were thought to aid in repelling fire and other calamities.  These creatures have been given a new life as the symbol of Seoul.  Seoul has gone all out to promote them.  You can even buy plush haechi toys for children.
