Change?

It seems that Mr Obama’s honeymoon period, at least with the leaders of Europe, is at an end.  Things have cooled between Obama and President Sarkozy in France.  Sarkozy is, it seems, quite frustrated with Obama’s lack of resolve in dealing with Iran and North Korea as this article in The Wall Street Journal points out.   In his speech at the UN, Sarkozy took a bit of a swipe at Obama stating that “we are right to talk about the future, but the present comes before the future. And in the present, there are two nuclear crises”.  He went on to state “The peoples of the world hear what we’re saying, our promises, our commitments, our speech.  But we live in a real world, not a virtual one” (“mais nous vivons dans un monde réel, pas dans un monde virtuel“).  Obama had been at the UN speaking about nuclear disarmament and the like.  He is promising more dialogue with Iran and North Korea.  President Sarkozy asked what all this dialogue has lead to.  In his words, it has lead to nothing more than “more enriched uranium, more centrifuges, and a declaration from the Iranian leaders proposing to erase a member of the United National Organization from the map” (“Plus d’uranium enrichi, plus de centrifugueses et de surcoît, une déclaration des dirigeants iraniens proposant de rayer de la carte un membre de l’Organisation des Nations-Unies”)

As Nile Gardiner in the Daily Telegraph, a major newspaper in the UK, put it: “I cannot think of a more damning indictment of US global leadership than a French leader urging the president of the United States to show more backbone in confronting the world’s biggest state sponsor of international terrorism, a rogue state about to acquire nuclear capability”.  You can his take on things here.

  1. I love the quote in the last paragraph. It made me chuckle.
Well, it’s fall. I suppose that means things change anyway. I don’t know what to think anymore. I know Obama’s approval ratings are going down, but that doesn’t get him out of the White House. I am absolutely flabergasted at some of the things he demands of congress to pass.

  2. i’m with christine. and that is really funny that FRANCE is wanting him to buck up. ha ha. i’m glad people are starting to get disenchanted. i’m hoping we will not see a re-election. we’ll see if we can hang tight for a few more years. i’m kind of worried he’ll make such a mess of things we’ll never be able to dig ourselves out. how’s that for positive? ha ha. anyway, the weather is beautiful, yes?
