Red, very red

Here’s a door from the Forbidden City in Beijing.  Red has long been a favourite colour of the Chinese, as it is seen to have auspicious qualities.

However, there are uses of red in China which are, shall we say, a bit less pleasing?

I am told that the Chinese government shrinks Mao’s portrait a few centimetres each year.  While he appears on all denominations of China’s paper money, at least they’ve moved beyond things like this.
