North Korea’s nuclear test

North Korea is getting increasingly bold these past few weeks.  As you know, they launched a missile over Japan.  While no clear guidance from the UN Security Council took place, maybe this time they will take matters more seriously.  China, long patient with the North Koreans, was most decidedly not amused, as this statement from the Foreign Ministry of the People’s Republic of China shows.  Supporters of the late President Roh Moo-hyun were not happy about it, especially given former President Roh’s visit there in 2008.

The Korean government has decided to join the Proliferation Strategic Initiative, an initiative launched in 2003 by former President Bush dedicated to ending the traffickings of weapons of mass destruction.  South Korea previously had observer status and had refrained from joining, owing the fact that North Korea had made all sorts of threats and would consider South Korea’s joining of the PSI as “a declaration of war”.  The actions of North Korea have angered the South Korean government.  They have now decided to join the PSI, as the Korea Herald reports.

The opinion of many people here is that it was a very stupid act, but they weren’t overly alarmed by it.  Much of the focus has been, in recent days, on the death of President Roh.

  1. North Korea appears to be preparing a suicide on it’s own people rather than going to war with anyone. Sort of a “doomsday” device.
I feel their military leaders want the country to die with some sort of dignity and pride.
