Gyeongbok Palace (2)

Near the beautiful pavilion, there is a rather small collection of buildings near the back.  Rather than being painted in with the elaborate designs that every other building has, this one looks more like the home a nobleman.  I believe that it was here that King Gojong and Queen Myeongseong lived.  This area also has an important part to play in Korea’s modernization.

In the 1880s and 1890s, there were numerous attempts made on the life of King Gojong and Queen Myeongseong.  The first electric power generator in Korea was installed near here on the orders of the king.  He figured that if the area was illuminated at night, it would be harder from would-be assasins to hide.  However, I didn’t notice much vintage electrical equipment about.
