Well, at least we’re not Taiwan

Recently, the Korean Tourism Organization, the government owned corporation which promotes tourism in Korea commissioned a poll of about 7,000 different people raging in age from 18 to 64 about what the best tourist destinations in East Asia are.  The results were disappointing to the officials of the KTO.  Here’s the breakdown:

#1 Japan

#2 Singapore and Taiwan

#3 Hong Kong

#4 China

#5 Malaysia

#6 South Korea

#7 Taiwan

Koreans do love to travel and many of my students have been to several Asian nations.  However, for all the tourism that Koreans do, there is a large deficit of tourists coming here.  You can read about the plans that the KTO and the Korean government are thinking about here

Also, it is only very recently that the Korean government really began promoting Korea as a tourist destination.  Like with Mexico and its great pyramids, Korea is one of those places where you can come very close to the great historical monuments of its past.  History is always lurking somewhere or another.  Korea does offer other things besides historical tourism.  It offers places of great scenery and natural beauty as well.
