60 years of the DPRK

2008 is also the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea.  China is really their sole friend in the world, and given Beijing’s propensity for supporting murderous, dictatorial regimes, they really could not let the anniversary pass.

This press release from the Chinese government is really rich and if you want to get a chuckle, you can read it here.

The statement, signed by PRC President Hu Jintao, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Wu Bangguo, and the Premier of the PRC Wen Jiabao has some choice quotes, especially this one:

“Over the past 60 years, the self-reliant and hard-working DPRK people, under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung, General Secretary Kim Jong Il and the Workers’ Party of Korea, have scored remarkable achievements in their socialist revolution and construction, said the message.”

North Korea really isn’t self-reliant.  It is desperately poor country which relies on handouts from China and other places around the world.  China has long supported the DPRK both in the Korean War and for a long time after that.
