So, you like Korea?

One thing that Koreans often ask foreigners is what they think of their country.  If you respond in the affirmative, this can generate one of two responses.  One major response is, of course, “thank you”.  The second response is sometimes, “why?”  Those who give the second response often quote many of Korea’s problems, i.e. too many people in a small area (yes, it is crowded, but it is nowhere near as bad as Hong Kong can be), the ongoing protests (now directed against Japan rather than the USA), the extremely competitive environment with everyone pushing and shoving to get to the front and few other things.  One of my favourite former students, a wonderfully smart teenage boy used to love to ask me, “Are you crazy?  You can’t possibly like Korea.  The people are crazy and the school system is bad.”  Of course, this boy will soon be entering High School, so his will be the horrors of having class every day including Sunday and preparing for Korea’s greuling CSAT tests.
